How long does cold process soap need to cure?

Cold process soap typically needs 4-6 weeks to cure. During this time, water evaporates making the bar harder, and the saponification process fully completes. Higher superfat recipes may benefit from an extra week or two.

How much weight does soap lose during curing?

Cold process soap loses 10-15% of its weight during curing, mostly from water evaporation. Hot process loses less (5-10%) because some water is already driven off during cooking. Melt and pour loses very little (2-5%).

Can I use soap before it finishes curing?

Hot process and melt and pour soap can be used sooner. Cold process soap should cure for at least 4 weeks to ensure the pH has dropped to a safe level (below pH 10) and the bar is hard enough to last well in the shower.

How should I store soap while it cures?

Place bars on a rack or shoe box lid with good airflow on all sides. Turn bars weekly. Keep away from direct sunlight which can fade colours. A cool, dry room with good ventilation is ideal.
