How many pieces can I fit in a kiln?

It depends on kiln size, shelf count, piece dimensions and firing type. Bisque firings allow stacking and touching, so you can fit more. Glaze firings require spacing between all pieces. A typical 50cm round kiln with 3 shelves holds roughly 20-40 small to medium pieces for bisque.

How much does it cost to fire a kiln in the UK?

A typical small to medium electric kiln (3-4 kW) costs between £8 and £15 per firing at current UK electricity rates. Stoneware firings cost more than earthenware because they take longer and reach higher temperatures.

Can pottery pieces touch during firing?

During bisque firing, pieces can touch and even be stacked inside each other since there is no glaze to stick. During glaze firing, pieces must not touch each other or the kiln shelves where glazed, as the molten glaze will permanently bond them together.

Pieces per shelf = Usable area ÷ (piece width + spacing) × (piece depth + spacing)
Electricity cost = Kiln kW × Firing hours × Price per kWh
Cost per piece = Total electricity cost ÷ Number of pieces
