Why should I score paper before folding?

Scoring creates a groove that guides the fold, giving a cleaner crease. It is essential for cardstock above 160 gsm where folding without scoring causes cracking.

What tools can I use to score paper?

A bone folder with a ruler is the traditional method. A scoring board, embossing stylus or the back of a butter knife also work. For consistent results, a scoring board with pre-set measurements is ideal.

Should I score on the inside or outside of the fold?

Score on the outside (mountain fold side) of the fold. The paper will fold toward the scored groove, creating a clean valley fold.
