Paper Grain Calculator — Fold Direction Guide

Determine paper grain direction and its effect on folding quality for cards, books and paper projects.

How We Calculate This

Paper is made from fibres that tend to align in one direction during manufacturing. This alignment is called the grain direction.

  • Folding with the grain produces clean, crisp folds with minimal cracking
  • Folding against the grain can cause cracking, especially on heavier stocks above 160 gsm

The calculator helps you determine which way the grain runs and whether your planned fold direction will produce good results.
