What is a standard necklace length?

Common UK necklace lengths: choker 350-400mm, princess 430-480mm, matinee 500-600mm, opera 700-860mm. The most popular is princess length (about 450mm).

How does bead shape affect the count?

Rondelle (disc) beads take up less length along the strand than round beads of the same diameter, so you need more. Oval and tube beads take up more length, so you need fewer. This calculator adjusts the count based on your bead shape.

Should I knot between beads?

Knotting between beads is traditional for pearls and semi-precious stones. It prevents beads from rubbing together and stops all beads falling off if the strand breaks. Each knot adds about 1.5-2mm to the total length, reducing the number of beads that fit.

How much extra thread do I need?

Allow 30-50% extra thread beyond the finished strand length. Stretch cord needs the most extra (50%) for secure knots. Beading wire needs about 20% extra for crimping. Silk thread needs 30% extra for knotting and finishing.

How We Calculate This

The calculator subtracts clasp length from the total strand length to get usable stringing length, then accounts for bead shape, spacers and knotting.

The formula

Effective bead length = Bead diameter x Shape multiplier

Beads = floor(Usable length / (Effective bead length + Spacer + Knot allowance))
