What card weight is best for gift boxes?

For small boxes (under 10 cm), 250-300 GSM cardstock works well. For larger boxes, 350-400 GSM or corrugated board provides better rigidity. Decorative boxes benefit from 300 GSM with a printed or textured finish.

How wide should glue tabs be?

Standard glue tabs are 1-2 cm wide. For small boxes, 1 cm is sufficient. For larger boxes or heavier card, 1.5-2 cm gives a stronger bond. Score the fold line for clean edges.

What is the difference between separate and hinged lids?

A separate lid lifts off entirely and is slightly larger than the base so it fits over the top. A hinged lid is attached to the base and folds open. Separate lids look more luxurious; hinged lids are easier to construct.

How do I account for material thickness?

Base sheet: The flat template width = box length + 2 x box height + 2 x glue tabs. The template length = box width + 2 x box height + 2 x glue tabs.

Separate lid: The lid is sized larger by 2 x material thickness + 1 mm clearance. Lid wall height is typically one-third of the box height (minimum 2 cm).

Hinged lid: The lid is part of the same sheet, adding extra length for the lid panel and hinge.
